Groom Lake

Beyond the conspiracy theories and popular culture lore, Groom Lake, commonly known as Area 51, has been the site of some of America’s most secret military and scientific research and development programs since 1955. These include the legendary U-2 and SR-71 spy planes, the F-117A stealth bomber and, undoubtedly, many more.

The Invisible Base

Groom Lake abuts the northeast corner of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) at the center of the sprawling Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). Its extremely isolated location, vast airspace and forbidding security systems create an ideal environment for developing and testing advanced aircraft and technologies in near total secrecy.

The proximity of Groom Lake to the NTS puts it directly in the crosshairs of the invisible enemy. It is reasonable to assume that radioactive fallout from more than 1,000 nuclear tests over more than four decades has contaminated significant portions of Groom Lake’s environment.

The U.S. government has not disclosed information about the environmental impact of NTS nuclear testing on Groom Lake. There are no official reports of any adverse effects from toxic radiation and materials on the military and civilian personnel who have worked at Area 51, because the government does not officially acknowledge these people even exist.

However, anecdotal evidence provided by those who have served there indicate a history of unexplained illnesses and deaths consistent with hundreds of reports from others who have served on the NTS and the Tonopah Test Range.
