The Nevada Test
& Training Range
One of the most significant military installations in the United States, the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) occupies a vast desert expanse in south-central Nevada. Established in 1940 as the Las Vegas Army Airfield, it first served as a critical pilot training site during World War II.
The NTTR gained strategic prominence in the early 1950s and throughout the Cold War as it evolved into the primary US testing ground for nuclear weapons. Hundreds of military and civilian nuclear tests were conducted there, all in the name of weapons development, national security and scientific research.
As public awareness and concern over the environmental and health impacts of nuclear testing increased, the federal government attempted to mitigate their effects and, In 1992, a moratorium on nuclear testing was declared. Since then, NTTR activities have focused on advanced, non-nuclear military training and weapons testing.
