The Injured

The Injured

As nuclear testing released huge amounts of deadly contaminants into the air, soil and water supply, thousands of personnel working and living within the NTTR, were constantly exposed to these dangerous substances. Thousands of personnel were under attack by the invisible enemy. Illnesses from exposure often took years to appear. This list, is what the face of the invisible enemy looks like.

The Attacks

United States Air Force veteran Sergeant Dave Crete was stationed on the Tonopah Test Range (TTR) from 1983 to 1987. This was prior to the sudden and complete shutdown of the TTR in 1992 when a comprehensive, 17-year environmental reclamation project began. Dave was assigned to the 4461st Security Police Squadron that provided security for the Air Force’s (then) top-secret F-117A stealth aircraft, which were based at the TTR airport. Other Air Force units stationed at the TTR during this time included the 4461st Support Group, the 4450th Tactical Group, and the 4477th TEF “Red Eagles”.

4461st Security Police Squadron and Support Group personnel were also deployed at other locations on the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), including The Nevada Test Site (NTS) and Groom Lake, home to Area 51. During their tours of duty on the TTR, Dave and his colleagues were attacked by an invisible enemy – toxic radiation and materials released by decades of nuclear testing.

  • They inhaled airborne contaminants
  • They drank and showered in contaminated water
  • They had extended, direct contact with contaminated soil and surfaces
  • They never knew their health and lives were at risk
  • They unknowingly carried these contaminants from the range to their homes, endangering families, friends and countless others they came in contact with

THE INJURIES

Many years after he left the Air Force, Dave began developing tumors throughout his body. He developed silicosis and other lung problems. His wife had a miscarriage. And their son was born with neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors and growths on nerves, the skin and other parts of the body.

Dave had no explanation for this onslaught of serious health problems, and he started sharing his experiences with colleagues in the squadron’s Facebook page. This acts as a support group that helps former squadron members transition from military to civilian life and maintain the close friendships formed during their service.

Almost immediately, other members began reporting similar problems affecting them and their families:

  • Abnormally high rates of tumor disorders and other cancers
  • Miscarriages
  • Birth defects
  • Mental illness
  • Premature or unexplained deaths
  • Many other illnesses and health issues

Dave came to believe there was a connection between these health problems and the squadron’s service on the TTR.

THE AFTERMATH

After years of research, Dave realized that thousands of military and civilian personnel who served not only on the TTR, but also on the NTS and at Groom Lake were under attack by the invisible enemy. And he learned that the signs and symptoms of their injuries often took years to appear. Dave also discovered that the federal government knew these dangerous contaminants caused serious, sometimes fatal illnesses. Yet, the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense continued to expose military and civilian personnel to these dangers.

Dave began formally documenting suspected injuries from exposure to toxic radiation and materials on the TTR. Soon, he expanded his efforts to document similar injuries on the NTS and at Groom Lake. This led to his formation of a non-profit organization that would expose the full extent of this tragedy and guarantee medical treatment and financial compensation for the brave men and women who were injured or died because of the invisible enemy.
